What we now call The Vine began simply as an idea.
The Vine is a worshiping community at Clemson United Methodist Church. We meet every Sunday at 10:30am in the Christian Life Center. The Vine is a service that blends the beautiful history of the Christian church with the modern day. Our band leads us in singing contemporary worship songs and modern renditions of classic hymns. We also share in a time of prayer, hear an inspiring message, and celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion together each week. The service has a laid-back feel and all are welcome just as they are! We hope to see you on Sunday at 10:30am.
A thought. A longing of the heart, if you will. What if worship at Clemson UMC began to change? What if we offered something different than what had been done throughout our history? What might happen if we expanded our horizons and offered something new? Who would we reach? How would we change?
Our church put together a team to explore this very idea. They decided that the best way to see this idea come to life would be to create a new worship service that would focus on two core elements: modern music and weekly communion.
Knowing that God is our source and strength for all things, the Vision Team quickly settled on The Vine, centering our name and our vision around John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything.”
From there, The Vine team worked tirelessly for nearly a year designing each aspect of our worship service. We consistently tried to honor the history of our church while still approaching worship in a modern way. We worked to develop liturgies faithful to the Christian church and especially to our United Methodist heritage. We worked to implement our brand and use media and technology in vibrant and engaging ways throughout worship.
On August 2, 2014, what was once a vision came to life as The Vine became a weekly worship service at Clemson UMC. Blending the historical and modern together in worship each week has enabled people of various backgrounds–those from very formal worship styles with sacraments every week, those from churches that rarely celebrated sacraments, those who hadn’t been to church in decades, and those who had never been before–to feel at home in this authentic community of faith.
What started as a simple idea has become so much more than that. It is worship, yes; but it is a community, too. A community of people with more questions than answers, where all are welcomed no matter where they may be on this faith journey. None of us have it all figured out. But together, we all share the love, grace, peace, mercy and reconciliation of a God who loves us more than we will ever understand.
Our story is not complete without you. The Vine only exists because people from many different places have been woven together by the love of God. We hope you’ll consider being a part of this story, too. Come join us any Sunday at 10:30am in the Christian Life Center at Clemson UMC. Together, we can be part of God’s unfolding story of love, hope, and peace in the world. Contact us anytime at (864) 654-5547 or [email protected]. We would love to hear from you!
